Despite the huge success of the original 1973 play, French production companies shied away from bringing this story of a gay, middle-aged couple to the big screen. Thankfully, Italy stepped in. As well as earning Michel Serrault a Best Actor César, the film was nominated for several Oscars. It has since had two sequels, two remakes and a musical adaptation.
