Gérard Oury hoped that his story, written together with a rabbi, would pave the way for reconciliation between two opposing cultures. However, tensions between the Muslim and Orthodox Jewish communities were so high that the wife of the film's publicist hijacked a Boeing 727 to prevent its release because she viewed the film as anti-Palestinian. She was shot and killed.
