Three-time winner in Venice in 1965, including the Volpi Cup for best actor for Toshirô Mifune, Red Beard is set at the beginning of the 19th century. A young ambitious doctor is sent against his will into a very poor district of Tokyo, to the clinic of the intransigent Doctor Niide, nicknamed “Red Beard” (Mifune). The very difficult filming marked an end to the series of 17 collaborations between Kurosawa and his hallmark actor Mifune.
