Kubrick uses the book of the same name by Humphrey Cobb as his inspiration for this story about French soldiers at the front in 1916. Heavily critical of French military injustices in the First World War, the film was banned in several countries, including Switzerland, where the premiere was held in 1970 after an intense political debate. In France, it was only released in 1975, almost 20 years after it was made.
