In 18th-century England, Dido Elizabeth Belle, a young girl of mixed race who is the illegitimate daughter of an admiral in the Royal Navy, is raised by her aristocratic grand-uncle, Lord Mansfield, and his wife. But Dido’s skin colour prohibits her from taking part in the normal activities of a girl of her rank. She soon falls in love with a young lawyer whom she draws into a fight against slavery.
